Double Cleansing for life
At this time of year, I don't know about you, but my skin is definitely feeling it. Let's face it, by mid-December we have all had a long year - work, life, fun, maybe a glass of wine or two & now the cold weather, can play havoc with our skin. I've been taking some extra time to really look after my skin recently and that includes Double Cleansing.
If you've been reading my blog for a while you might remember My Evening Skincare Routine. I'm afraid I now need to tell you. I've been doing it wrong. I kept reading other bloggers, & the skincare guru Caroline Hirons, talking about double cleansing but I hadn't really paid much attention. If I'm honest, I just thought it would be a hassle & a bit of a faff!
But, I had noticed that even when I was cleansing my skin thoroughly before bed (or so I thought!) I was still finding traces of make up on my face when I woke up in the morning. Clearly, I was not doing a very good job! Over on Caroline's blog, she has some amazing Cheat Sheets on skincare so check them out if you have any skin concerns. After reading her one on Double Cleansing & why it's so important, I was converted!
In the past, as I was not really one for foundation, I didn't think I needed to double cleanse. But now, I just can't get enough and wear foundation or tinted moisturiser most days. I'm a beauty addict, you should see my drawers. Eek!
If you don't look after your skin properly, it does not matter how good the make-up is! If you think about it, so many of the products we use on our face, are designed to be sweat proof, stress proof and basically last all day. It makes sense to therefore assume that it might take more than a cleansing wipe or some plain old water to get it off at night.
What is Double Cleansing?
Put simply - your first cleanse removes your make-up & and the second is an actual cleanse of your skin (you only need to double cleanse at night). When it comes to removing your make-up, if you've really gone to town with your eye make-up, you might find it easier to use an eye make-up remover first.
But which cleanser to choose? There are so many different types of cleansers it can be overwhelming. I find using an oil-based cleanser as my first cleanse works best for me but for my second cleanse, I mix it up a little. The key is to remember 1. Remove make-up 2. Cleanse skin.
As I said, I'm a beauty addict (this applies to skin care as well as make-up) and I'm also a sucker for trying a new product. I'll share my thoughts the 6 cleansers I have been using and you can make your own mind up.
Bobbi Brown Soothing Cleansing Oil
Ever since I watched Hannah Martin & Amy Conway using this and seeing how amazingly well it took their make-up off, I just had to try it. It really is amazing! It removes all my eye make-up without the need to use an eye make-up remover (unless it's a bold eye kind of day) as well as getting rid of everything else. I massage it onto my skin, using the heels of my hands to gentle rub into my eyes and then add a little water to create a slight lather. I then use a muslin cloth or flannel to remove the product. Et Voila, make-up gone. My first cleanse product of choice. EVERY.SINGLE.DAY
When it comes to my second cleanse or morning cleanse it really does depend on my mood that day & what I think my skin needs.
The cleanser of choice of YouTubers. I have lost track of the number of vloggers I have seen waxing lyrical about this product - they're not wrong. It has a non-foaming cleansing gel-to-oil that melts into skin to quickly and gently remove impurities and makeup while actively illuminating and nourishing to reveal balanced, clean, fresh, radiant skin that feels soft and smooth. It's a British brand, rich in vitamins and enzymes.
This has really grown on me! I actually quite like the texture of the product, which as the name suggests, is a cross between a gel & a cream. It goes on really well and leaves my skin leaving very soft afterwards. This is an easy product and can be used on your eyes so it's handy if I really want to make sure I've shifted that eye-liner.
Like the Bobbi Brown Soothing Cleansing Oil, this smells amazing and would be very at home in a spa! Like the Glossier cleanser, this can also be used on your eyes if you find the oil has not quite got rid of everything (unlikely in my experience). A couple of pumps massaged on to the skin and then removed with warm water & a face cloth leaves my face feeling very soft. This is a new product from Bobbi Brown which infuses skin with refreshing moisture, leaving it cushiony soft and prepped for makeup.
If you saw my previous post on my Morning Skincare Routine, you might remember this one. Aurelia Probiotic Skincare's products are organic & natural. The Aurelia Miracle Cleanser (£38, 120ml) is brilliant & feels almost like a moisturiser when applied. I tend to use this one in the morning so I keep it in the shower. Makes it easy to do a quick face cleanse whilst having my morning shower.
This is another natural product. Lemon & Mandarin Oils combined with Kigelia extract work to cleanse, tone and tighten the skin, while fatty acids from Baobab oil moisturise and improve hydration and firmness. The fresh acids of Pomegranate extract act as a light exfoliator that combine with Chamomile to hydrate, soften and reduce inflammation. This does smell amazing and I really want to love it. It definitely makes my skin feel clean but I also find it slightly stings my skin. I'm sure that's because of the citrus oils but at the end of the day, when I'm trying to be kind to my skin, it's not what I want. For that reason, I find it better to sue in the morning, but I have to be honest, I don't reach for it much because I just don't like the stinging.
That's it, I hope this has helped you understand a little more about Double Cleansing and why it is so important. I can't recommend it enough!
