The Pig Near Bath
New year, new job. On the 12th February I start a new job which I'm so excited about. I had been at my previous company for 10 years so I'm excited for a new challenge! I can't wait to get stuck in and I want to start raring to go, so I decided to take some time out between jobs and treat myself to some R&R. I'm really enjoying seeing friends, going to yoga, going for long walks, writing blog & Instagram content, lie ins watching This Morning and most of all not setting my alarm. Basically, enjoying life without having to go to work.
I decided not to go on holiday because, if you live in the UK like me, going anywhere hot at this time of year, generally means travelling a long way which equals expensive! So, I decided to treat myself to a bit of a staycation and go to Bath, Bristol & The Cotswolds. It's been really fun deciding where to go and I've also been able to tie it in with visiting friends who now live out of London.
First stop is The Pig near Bath, a mellow country house perfectly situated near Bath and Bristol, where I was greeted by this swan in the car park!
I went to uni in Bristol, so I now the area pretty well and have lots of happy memories from my time living there. I've been lucky enough to go to The Pig on the Beach and the original Pig in Brockenhurst, but only ever for lunch or dinner so staying the night is a real treat. I'm treating myself to a massage too, so it really is a proper treat.
Location & Style
It's a real get-away location, truly rural, with quintessentially English views of this undiscovered part of Somerset.
As you would expect, it's designed in the style that has become The Pig's signature and features a greenhouse restaurant, a private room for dinner parties, 29 bedrooms and massage treatment rooms.
Having arrived around lunchtime in preparation for my sap treatment, I didn't want a full lunch but needed something to eat. I opted to sit in one of the lovely bar areas and enjoy a Cucumber Cooler, a delicious blend of cucumber, elderflower cordial, apple juice, lemon & ginger whilst munching on some chorizo croquettes from the "Piggy Bits' menu. As someone who doesn't drink very much, I was very pleasantly surprised to see such an extensive non-alcoholic menu - not just fruit juice, coke & lemonade here!
The main restaurant is at the back of the hotel and looks out onto the main gardens. As seems to be The Pig's way, a large part of the restaurant is set in a glasshouse, but don't worry it's not cold! I had supper in the main restaurant at a lovely little table. My waiter was very friendly & knowledgeable with just the right amount of attentiveness.
The menu is full of dishes to get your taste buds going. with many of the ingredients grown in the kitchen garden or locally sourced. I chose to have the "Tamworth Tomahawk" which sounds immense! It's basically pork, served on the bone, accompanied by a delicious cider & mustard sauce. It genuinely was one of the nicest meals I have had for a long time.
From the "Piggy Bits" served in the bar to the supper I had in the restaurant, I can't fault it. The food was fresh, delicious & locally sourced.
When I booked, the only room available was a Comfy Luxe room which is one of larger rooms & featured a large monsoon shower, four poster bed and a freestanding bath. The room also had its own 'larder' stocked with snacks, drinks and a Nespresso machine.
The bath was one of my highlights. Having had a massage in the afternoon, I decided to luxuriate in the bath afterwards, which as you can see from the photo, was a stunning roll top bath in the main bedroom. It was lovely & deep, so I could be fully submerged under the water (boobs & all!) whilst I caught up on some YouTube.
The bathroom itself, was clean & with a marble sink and big walk-in shower, complete with delicious-smelling Bramley products, the bathroom definitely gets a big tick!
The bed was big & comfy and the decor had a lovely feel to it. Most hotels lack storage space but that was not an issue here. There were also plenty of plug sockets and lots of towels, and not just those annoying little ones, I love a big, fluffy towel! There was a cute little desk that could be used for writing or as a dressing table but I found I couldn't use it for doing my make-up as the lighting was a bit rubbish. It wasn't much better in the bathroom either, so that's something it would be great to improve. I usually take a small light-up mirror with me for doing my make-up, but typically I left it at home!
One slight niggle, the wooden floors. Whilst they look stunning, being on the ground floor with people above meant I could hear a lot of walking around, especially a woman in the room above me in her high heels! But if that's the only thing, that's pretty good going.
The Spa Treatments
When they said the spa treatments were conducted in a potting shed, I was a little unsure how that would work and whether it would be really cold. I could not have been more wrong.
The treatment room is an original garden shed but it has been transformed into a single treatment room with charming features and heating, so you will stay warm & toasty. I had a full body massage and, I must say, it was one of the nicest massages I have had.
Using Bamford products, my therapist used the light pressure I had requested as I really wanted to relax not be in pain, and I think I even fell asleep. That's the sign of a good massage! If you visit The Pig near Bath, don't be put off that the treatments are in a potting shed, you won't be disappointed at all. But make sure you reserve your slot in advance as there are only 2 treatment rooms.
Verdict & Tips
From the moment I arrived, I felt relaxed. The welcome was warm & the staff were lovely. If you can, I would arrive early and have a stroll around the market garden and some "Piggy Bits' in the bar. The whole experience was just what I needed and a perfect start to my UK mini-break, I will definitely be back!
*Update* Service is second to none. I left my electric toothbrush & flosser behind and the staff couldn't have been more helpful. They have kindly posted them back to me. Now if that's not great service, I don't know what is!
I would love to hear about your favourite places to visit, beauty products you're loving or new brands you have discovered so I can give them a go, so do get in touch.
Thanks for reading, until next Sunday.
